Scattered power outages reported in parts of Athens & Limestone County

ATHENS-Scattered power outages reported in parts of Athens & Limestone Co. Crews with Athens Utilities are working as quickly as possible while maintaining safety. Ice is forming on lines and tree limbs, so outages could be an issue during this weather event.

Utilities

Ice is accumulating on power lines and tree limbs. Lines and limbs are breaking, and trees are falling. Athens Utilities has crews out working to restore scattered outages in Athens and Limestone County. Outages may continue to be an issue during this weather event. Please know our crews will work as quickly as they can while making safety a priority. As of 3:45 p.m. Monday, Athens Utilities Foreman Johnnie Pryor said approximately 6,000 customers were without power.

 

Sanitation

Due to expected frozen road conditions on Tuesday, Feb. 16, the Athens Sanitation Department will not run its routes. Pickup will resume as soon as road conditions allow. Tuesday’s customers need to put their carts out on Wednesday. Updates about the collection schedule will be issued.

 

City Offices Closed

City offices will be closed Tuesday, Feb. 16.

 

Streets

Limbs and power lines are falling into streets. Icy conditions continue to develop. The Street Department will sand bridges as they can as long as there is no danger from falling limbs and trees. Street Department Manager Dolph Bradford and Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said motorists who have to be on the road should slow down and watch for debris and slick spots throughout this weather event.
