James Larry Gilliland, 75, of Haleyville, Alabama entered into rest on February 7, 2021 at Cypress Cove Center in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.

Mr. Gilliland was born on June 11, 1945.  Larry served as Haleyville City Councilman from 1977-1984; Haleyville Mayor from 1984-1988 and 1992-1996; Colonel for the State Defense Force; Director of EMA; Winston County Sheriff; Addison Police Chief Assistant; police officer for Haleyville and a fireman.  Larry was deputy coroner for 20 years and was sworn in as Winston County Coroner in 1999 and served as coroner for 21 years.  He was a licensed funeral director and embalmer; a Mason and was a lay minister.  Larry enjoyed deer hunting, cooking, watching westerns and especially spending time with his family and his dog.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 from 12pm-2pm at Nichols Funeral Home in Haleyville, where services will be held at 2pm.  Brother Gary Wakefield and Brother Joseph Martin will officiate. Burial will follow in Winston Memorial Cemetery in Haleyville, Alabama.

Larry is survived by his daughters, Christi (Brandon) Norris, Jenny (Mike) Bailey; grandchildren, Adam (Emily) Edwards, Devin and Drew Norris, Morgan Long, Trey (skye) Bailey, Tyler Bailey, and Kaci (Adam) Loden; great grandson, Tucker Lee Edwards; aunts, Annie Mae Brumley, and Mavinee Bishop; sisters-in-law, Sally Gilliland, and  Denice Gilliland; and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Gilliland; parents, Hamilton “Hamp” and Dorothy Gilliland; brothers, Jack, Wayne, and Billy Gilliland; brother-in-law, Rudolph Tucker; and uncles, Odis, and Roger Bishop.
