Jeanette Smith Hargrove

It is with great sadness that the family of Jeanette Smith Hargrove announces she went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 9, 2021.

Jeanette was born on the February 2, 1939, to Robert and Jewel Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Harold Paul Hargrove; her parents; brother, James Smith; sisters, Eloise Massey and Marjorie Stewart. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Deon and Nicoleta Hargrove; daughter and son-in-law, DeAnna and Tim McNeill, grandsons, Eddy Musat and Warren McNeill; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Jon Thrower, brother-in-law, Jim Hargrove; and many nieces and nephews.

Jeanette came to Athens, Alabama, from Pulaski, Tennessee, where she grew up on the Milky Way Farm. In Athens she attended Athens College for two years where she obtained a Secretarial Science degree. She then got a job with one of the original German scientists, Dr. Walter Haeusserman, a member of Dr. Wernher von Braun’s team. After working seventeen years in aerospace, she decided the long hours were not for her and returned to college to obtain her teaching degree. She taught English and Literature at East Limestone for 15 years. Jeanette was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, a Master Gardener and a community volunteer in several organizations.

Funeral services will be held graveside at Athens City Cemetery on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Paul and Jeanette Hargrove Scholarship Fund. Donations may be mailed to East Limestone High School, 15641 East Limestone Road, Athens, AL 35613.
