George Howard Gurley

George Howard Gurley was born on May 6, 1950 in Somerville, Alabama to the union of the late Rance and Henretta Gurley. He was the fourth of five children. His brothers Thomas and William Gurley preceded him in death. George attended Morgan County Training School and transferred to Morgan High School to graduate due to integration in the State of Alabama.

George accepted Christ at an early age. He was a member of Mt. Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Somerville, AL until he moved to Detroit, MI. After moving to Detroit, he started employment with the Chrysler Corporation and later worked for Massey Ferguson Tractor Plant until his retirement.

George met and married Hattie Watson and from that union a son Doraell was born. He later met and married Francine Edwards and from that union two children were born, LaShanda and Daumon.

George had a passion for football and even played for a Semi-Pro Team at one time. He loved music especially the Blues He was a funny man, always joking, very outspoken, honest and direct. He would tell you the truth no matter how it made you feel. George loved his grandchildren and would often spend a day at the park with them, cooking on the grill, just simply playing or watching them play.

George battled with health challenges and fought to the bitter end – ‎Ecclesiastes 9:11 reminds us: The race is not given to the swift nor the strong but to the one that endures until the end. George made his transition from this life on January 4, 2021 at Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, Michigan

He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Ina Judith Smith and LaShanda Monique Edwards of Detroit, MI; son, Doraell Gurley of Louisville, KY and Daumon Gurley of Detroit, MI; stepdaughter, Sharonda Edwards of Detroit, MI; six grandchildren, McKinsey, Seydou, Seyhahn, Skylar, Daumoni George, Zakhai; a brother, Lord (Sandra) Gurley of Southfield, MI; a sister, Vesta Pears of Houston, TX; special daughter and family Amanda, DeMonte and Armani; a host of nephews, nieces and extended family and friend

Inhumation will be 11:00 am Saturday at Shiloh Church Cemetery in Somerville, Alabama.
