Sam Spruell, 63 of Mt Hope passed away January 7, 2021 at St Vincent Hospital in Birmingham, AL after a long extended illness. He is survived by his loving wife Lynn Spruell and his children Jonathon Spruell (Kristi) and Liz Rhodes (Ricky). His Mother, Sue Spruell, Sister Judy Spruell and a Brother Wayne Spruell.
His 5 precious grandchildren, Shelby, Madi, Max, Mia and Cam. His loving niece Christy Kerr Bowman (Ed), daughter Reece Montgomery and son Reagan Bowman.
He was preceded in death by his Father, Hershel Spruell.
If you knew Sam you always knew where he stood on issues and never doubted your friendship with him even if you found yourself on the other side of things from time to time. Sam was the epitome of an exceptional servant, leader of immense integrity. The Boll Weevil Eradication program is just one of many timeless leadership and stewardship examples. He was always available, open and sharing with others even when it might have been a sacrifice to his family and farm. His passion for the Alabama cotton producer is unmatched. Whether it is cotton policies, business and production issues,
Sam was always informed, analytical and prepared on any issue before addressing them with others. He was factually guided by the truth and is never shy or hesitant in standing in the light of the truth. In cotton policy development when asked ( and sometimes when not asked but felt it his duty to stand), he was determined and always responded in an even and measured manner to show respect to the people around him. He was careful in his personal approach to make sure that if others were offended it was due to their ability to not accept the truth and facts as he viewed them. Here is one of his hallmark traits: He would continue to show respect and be friends with those who chose to counter position with him. Of course in his delivery and discussion, he always had a humorous story to embellish the unsuing dialogue!
His presence will be sorely missed . But he will always be between the rows!
Sam played an integral role in many cotton farming organizations to include but not limited to: Southern Cotton Growers, where he served as President 2004-2005, Southeastern Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation, Alabama Cotton Commission, National Cotton Council. He was a principle partner of the learnings of his life’s work with others through his amazing leadership and mentorship. Through these generous contributions the farming community is enriched and will continues to reap the benefits of his generous dedication.
Sam Spruell loved people, especially those who needed a hand up. He truly had a heart for those in need, so it was no surprise when he agreed to be part of a ministry that God ordained in the Mt Hope community. Sam, quickly became an essential part of the Community Clothes Closet and Ministry of Hope. Sam not only assisted in the founding of the ministry and daily operations but when the opportunity of presented itself Sam made the ultimate donation of a building to house The Caring Place. Through his generosity the ministry has grown to serve much of Northwest Alabama.
His family will be holding a private service on Monday January 11, 2021.
