SFC (Ret.) Flem Bowen Donnie Walker, Sr., 83, of Lineville, AL passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at his home. He was born on June 25, 1937 to J.D.H. and Fannie Walker. He was married to the love of his life, Charlene Latham Walker, for 62 years.
Flem joined the Army in November of 1956 and served his country in a career that spanned over 20 years and included tours in Utah, Georgia, and Illinois as well as a tour in Japan, Korea, and two tours in Vietnam. Upon retirement, he and his family returned to his beloved Clay County. He worked for and eventually managed the Clay County Exchange where he formed lifelong friendships.
He will be remembered for his dedication to his faith, his family, and his country. He was a man of integrity who believed in and lived by the principle that a man was only as good as his word. He was selfless and would help anyone in any way he could.
He is survived by two daughters; Darline Carr, of Ashland and Donna Burton (Larry) of Lineville, and one son, LTG Flem B. Walker, Jr. (Hope) of Huntsville, AL.; grandchildren Chris and Amy Carr, Major Zach and Krystal Burton, Bridgette Burton, Ben and Cassie Burton, Hannah and Corey Maginley, Holly Walker, and 1LT Flem B. Walker, III. He was also immensely proud of his great grandchildren: Aubrie and Alex Daniels, MaKenna, Lawson, Brooks, and Sawyer Burton, and Jackson Maginley.
Flem is also survived by one brother, Dock Walker, and three sisters, Bonnie (L.C.) Harris, Nonnie Carroll (Gene), and Jo Whitman (Roger), all of Clay County. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Charlene; son-in-law, Steve Carr; brothers, Woodrow Walker, Hilt Walker, Ray Cummings, and Sonny Walker; and one sister, Kathryn Rowden.
Pallbearers are Larry Burton, Mayor Larry Fetner, Chris Carr, Major Zach Burton, Ben Burton, Corey Maginley, Dylan Fultz, 1LT Flem B. Walker, III, Alex Daniels, and Ray Latham. Honorary pallbearers are Dock Walker, Mayor Roy Adamson, Jeff Kinder, Jeral Clark, and the Clay County Exchange Crew.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m at Benefield Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at Lineville Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 2 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Black’s Chapel Independent Methodist Church Cemetery with full military honors. The family encourages that CDC guidelines for mask compliance, social distancing, and hand sanitizing be followed.
