Anthony Gerard Schaefer, age 65, of Huntsville passed away on Thursday, October 15th. He is survived by his wife Susanne Schaefer, daughter Genevieve Schaefer, and sister Appie Thompson.

Tony was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated from St. Xavier High School and Xavier University. He got his PhD in Organic Chemistry at The Ohio State University.

He had a passion for chemistry and worked as a chemist for many years, developing quite a few patents. He worked for the U.S. Census Bureau for the past ten years.

Tony was above all a family man— a loving husband, incredible father, and a fun-loving “Unk.” He could always be found making his wife a cup of tea, helping his daughter with chemistry homework, or talking to his sister on the phone.

Tony has been living in Huntsville since 2004 and has served the community as a soccer coach, a referee, a reading helper, a pool board member, a swim meet volunteer, and more.

He loved to go on adventures, including ski trips with friends, random drives with his daughter, and long walks with his dog Daphne. He also loved to bake, making the family pies every holiday and his famous Christmas cookies to give out at church.

Tony was extraordinarily patient—he could watch a track meet all day or spend hours successfully untangling knots. He was a wise man, gave great advice, and could calm anyone down or make anyone laugh.

His funeral mass will be at 6pm on Tuesday, October 20th at Saint Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church in Huntsville, Alabama.
