Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray

SHEFFIELD – Citing illness as the reason, suspended Police Chief, Greg Ray’s lawyer has requested a postponement of his Civil Service hearing until early next year. The postponement was granted, according to Ray’s lawyer, Tony Hughes because Ray has been too sick to to assist in preparing his case.

The new date has not been set.

Ray was terminated in late October by what Mayor Ian Sanford characterized as management-performance deficiencies. At that time Ray was given the choice of resigning with a severance package, or face involuntary employment termination. When Ray refused to quit, Sanford suspended the Chief with pay until a hearing could be held. Ray subsequently filed for a hearing, which was to be help on December 13.

Ray has been in law enforcement for 27 years, has served with Sheffield’s force since 1992, and has been Police Chief since 2007.
