Dr. Richard Edwin Rice, 84, of Huntsville, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 4th. Dr. Rice was born January 22, 1936 in rural north Mississippi near Charleston, MS to D. L. Rice and Nannie Burnett Rice. He received his B.S. degree from Mississippi State University, his Medical degree from Tulane University Medical School, and did his internship at US Public Health Service Hospital in Baltimore, MD with a 3 year Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. He practiced OB-GYN in Huntsville, AL from 9-1-65 until retirement 12-31-95.
Dr. Rice was a member of board of trustees of Madison County Medical Society; Chief of Division of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Huntsville Hospital; First Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical Center Hospital; member of Madison County Medical Society, Medical Association of State of AL AMA, Alabama Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists; and a longtime member of First Christian Church in Huntsville where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He established the Rebecca Rice Scholarship Fund at First Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Quilla Rice; children, Monica Beck (Tommy), Michelle Evans (Tom), Rachel Malone, and Richard Rice; grandchildren, Jessica Beck, Jordan Humphrey (Michael), Alissa Beck, Brian Malone, Zackary Malone, and Molly Evans; sister, Marion Nell Meade; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Rebecca Rice; and siblings, David Rice, Jr., Earl Rice, Elizabeth Bryant, Walter Rice, Jimmy Rice, Bennye Chatham.
Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8th, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral will be live streamed at 2:30 p.m. from First Christian Church. The link is https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzQCRY8Vfa-IDhuqUnUhCKw
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice Family Care or First Christian Church.
