David Mendel David Mendel, 91, died Friday, June 26th, 2020, after a long battle with COPD. He was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1928. He earned his Aeronautical Engineering Degree at Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana where he met his wife Montrue Worthington. They were married in 1950 just prior to Dave receiving his Draft notice. Dave was sent to Huntsville, Alabama where he worked at the Army Missile Command, first during his military service and later as a civilian. He retired in 1984 to pursue his two favorite hobbies, building model airplanes and playing trumpet and band music.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Montrue, who passed in 2005. He is survived by his four children, Susan Mendel, Jane Mendel, Douglas Mendel and Laura Mendel Britton and three grandchildren, Cameron Mendel, Clara Sternberg and Kyra Britton.

David was a founding member of many of Huntsville’s music organizations, the Huntsville Symphony, the Huntsville Town Band, which became the Huntsville Concert Band, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville Wind Ensemble. He served as the director of the Huntsville Concert Band from 1984-1997 and continued to play with them until a few months before he died.

The family will have a private burial. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Huntsville Concert Band.
