Christian Children’s home and Service One Trucking had a lot of chicken…

FLORENCE – So, what do you do with a huge truckload of chicken? That was the issue when Tyson Foods near Dothan told Don Williams that his organization, The North Alabama Christian Children’s Home , could have that much chicken to distribute to area organizations that serve families in need. Well, that was really great. All Don had to do now was to somehow get the full trailer load of food up here to The Shoals.

That’s when he called Robert Walker and Kelly Robinson of Service One Transportation in Muscle Shoals. Synergy.

Don and Robert got on the phone and discussed how much would it cost the organization to drive a tractor-trailer to Dothan and bring back the food. Williams had to see if the cost would fit into the organizations tight budget. Turns out it did. Walker asked when the truck would be needed for the run. Williams said the chicken would be ready for pickup Tuesday, June 2, and would be needed at the distribution site in Florence the next morning. Service One is one of the larger trucking companies in Alabama, so there was plenty of capacity in the fleet to do the job. And that was the first hurdle for Williams.

Second hurdle… How much was this going to cost? There’s obviously the truck, the driver’s pay, and the fuel for the trip to consider. It could be expensive for a non-profit, thought Don. Turns out, that it wasn’t expensive for him at all. Robert said that he would supply the truck, driver and all the fuel for free. And that’s just what Service One did.

Organizations from all over North Alabama arrived at the Florence-Lauderdale Coliseum Wednesday morning and everybody there pitched-in to help each other load out the chicken. It was really well organized, almost like of a cross between a military operation and a ballet. and before long the food was on its way.

Thank a Trucker!
