Governor Ivey Eases COVID-19 Restrictions

MONTGOMERY – Governor Kay Ivey on Thursday, May 21 issued an amended Safer at Home Order to be applied Statewide. The order which includes an expanded list of items to reopen will be effective Friday, May 22, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. and will expire on Friday, July 3, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.

As of 2:30 PM on Thursday, May 21 Alabama has 13,119 confirmed cases of COVID-19 total tested to date is 170,739 with 529 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 and 4,083 cases of COVID have been reported in the last 14 days and 67,004 people have been tested in the last 14 days.

The following changes will be effective Friday, May 22 at 5 p.m.:

  • Entertainment venues, such as arcades, theaters and bowling alleys can reopen.
  • Athletic activities can restart practice on May 23; competition allowed June 15.
  • Education institutions can reopen June 1.
  • Childcare facilities can reopen without limits on numbers.
  • Summer camps can reopen.

All the facilities are subject to social-distancing and sanitation rules and guidelines. There are individual guidelines for different types of businesses.The current order ends July 3 at 5 p.m.

Coronavirus restrictions remain in place for:

  • All retail stores subject to 50 percent occupancy rules
  • Activities at senior citizen centers are suspended
  • Restricted visitation at hospitals and nursing homes
  • Non-work gatherings still require people to maintain a 6-foot distance between each other
  • Restaurants and bars are open but with limited capacity.
  • Athletic facilities are open.
  • Close-contact service providers, such as salons and barber shops, are open.
