ZIP CITY – Well, the big jubilee with music, food, and the personal appearance by Alabama Governor, Kay Ivey had to be postponed due to the statewide quarantine. But this past Saturday’s turn of events didn’t stop the heartfelt feelings of pride and accomplishment for the residents of this small community in Northern Lauderdale County as Zip City marked its Centennial. All of that fanfare will be robustly celebrated at a later date.

The postponement notwithstanding, March 2, 2020 marked the date of a hundred years of kinship, pride and brotherly love.

Even though Governor Ivey couldn’t be in town this past Saturday, she signed a proclamation to honor the big achievement in this small community. The milestone is important, because so many small places in rural counties will come into existence and quietly go away with nary any notice. But Zip city beat the odds and has held a continuing presence in Lauderdale County for now a hundred years.

But there’s more! Zip city resident and owner of P&K Western Wear, Robert Walker went to great trouble to create a lasting and rare commemorative whittling knife that can only be found at P&K Western Stores in Zip City and in the Florence Boulevard locations. It is beautiful and was custom crafted by Sargent Cutlery. For more information and to see these one-of-a-kind artisan knives, stop by and get one. They crafted only 50, so the knives are instant collectibles!

This photo is of Robert and his best friend Buddy with one of the knives.

Here’s a close-in view of the knife. Proceeds from the sale of these beautiful pieces of artwork go back to the Zip City Community.
