MONTGOMERY-As of Tuesday, March 24 Governor Kay Ivey said she has no plans as of now to issue a shelter-in-place order for the state to slow the spread of the new COVID-19. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin and the Birmingham City Council have approved a statewide shelter-in-place orders, asking residents not to leave their homes except for essential tasks.
During her daily press conference with local news outlets on Tuesday Governor Ivey said that protecting Alabamians health while maintaining the state’s economy are her main concerns. Ivey said, “The safety and well-being of Alabamians is paramount, however, I agree with President Trump who thinks that a healthy and vital economy is just as essential to our quality of life.”
Seventeen states have issued statewide shelter-in-place orders, asking residents not to leave their homes except for essential tasks.
Tuesday evening the Alabama Department of Public Health report 242 cases of COVID-19 in Alabama . Cases have been confirmed in 26 counties across the state with 91 of those cases reported in Jefferson County.
