Courtland Man Dies After Six Hour Standoff

COURTLAND-On Friday, March 20 Lawrence County sheriff’s Department report the death of a 36-year-old Courtland man.  The man died after a more than six hour standoff with authorities.

The incident began around 5:30 PM at a residence on Jefferson Street in Courtland after the Courtland Police received a disturbance call from the home.  According to deputies the Courtland Police were speaking with relatives when the man came out of the residence and began shooting.  there were no injuries at the time.

The man barricaded himself in the home and sporadically fired shots from inside the home.   After more than six hours the suspect was dead.  Authorities do not say how the man died.

The Florence/Lauderdale SWAT Team were at the scene along with the  Lawrence County Sheriffs Department.

The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.

Statement from the Lawrence County Sheriffs Office:

“The armed-barricaded subject incident on Jefferson Street in Courtland is over. The suspect involved is deceased. There were no other injuries reported. The investigation has been turned over to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation. All further inquiries about the investigation should be directed to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased as well as the officers involved in today’s incident.”
