Mrs. Joan Leslie McMurtrey age 72 of Athens, AL passed away on Friday, February 21, 2020 at Athens Limestone Hospital. Mrs. McMurtrey was born on August 30, 1947 in Giles County, TN to Hadren Townsend and Auvalene Pickett Townsend.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Larry Townsend.
Mrs. McMurtrey is survived by her husband, Tom McMurtrey; daughter, Stephanie Laxson (Joe) of Athens, AL; son, Mark Jones (Donna) of Lester, AL; step-daughters, Stacy McMurtrey Bufkin (Don) of Bentonia, MS and Carmen McMurtrey Pope (Geoff) of Atlanta, GA; step-son, Barry McMurtrey of New Haven CT; grandchildren, Hunter Jones, Preston Laxson, Dalton Laxson, Margaret Ruth Pope and Mary Frances Pope; sister, Joyce Eubank of Stella, TN.
Mrs. McMurtrey worked as an R.N. for 25 years at Athens Limestone Hospital. She loved living in the country and caring for all her animals, dogs, horses, cats and her goldfish. Mrs. McMurtrey truly enjoyed life and took great pleasure in being a wife, mother and grandmother.
A memorial service for Mrs. McMurtrey will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 prior to the service.
