NW-SCC holds Alabama Power Good Roots grant tree planting ceremony as part of the Clean Home Alabama initiative

PHIL CAMPBELL– Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) hosted a Good Roots Grant tree planting ceremony today (11/5) on the Phil Campbell campus as part of the Clean Home Alabama initiative.

The tree planting ceremony is the direct result of a $1,000 Alabama Power Foundation Good Roots Grant the College received in January of 2019 to help beautify the Phil Campbell campus.
NW-SCC President Dr. Glenda Colagross said the ceremony was timed perfectly with the new Clean Home Alabama initiative. “Through this initiative, Northwest-Shoals is partnering with other community colleges around the state and our local K-12 school systems to help beautify our state,” said Colagross. “The Alabama Community College System led the charge with Governor Ivey to put an initiative in place that gives us a great opportunity to give back to our community.”
According to Melinda Weaver, Alabama Power representative, the Good Roots Grants are designed to encourage projects that improve the quality of our environment in our communities through planting more trees. The Alabama Power Foundation Good Roots Grants website states, “One study conducted by the EPA shows that careful landscaping can decrease air conditioning bills by up to 75 percent, especially if you plant them on the south or southwest side of a structure to shade hot summer sun. In the winter, trees can be used to buffer harsh seasonal winds.”
Alabama Representative and former NW-SCC Student Government Association (SGA) President Jamie Kiel likened the growth of the young trees to the growth of the students on the NW-SCC Phil Campbell campus. “Some of my teachers at Phil Campbell are now administrators,” said Kiel. “I hope many of the students here today are able to come back as teachers and administrators.”
The ceremony concluded with Alabama Power  representative Melinda Weaver, Representative Jamie Kiel, NW-SCC President Dr. Glenda Colagross, NW-SCC Associate Dean of Instructional Programs Dr. Timmy James, and NW-SCC Phil Campbell Student Government President Graham Barley planting one of the seven trees.
