Thurman Calvin Burns

On the 7th day of October 2019, Thurman Calvin Burns passed away at the age of 92 at Riverside Senior Living in Decatur, Alabama.

Thurman was born on June 13, 1927 in Nauvoo, Alabama to W.T.S. and Lena (Jones) Burns. He attended Auburn University and then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Germany. Upon his return, he began a career working at the U.S. Army Missile Command in Huntsville, Alabama until his retirement in 1977. After his retirement, he dedicated his time to the Gideons International, Lay Speaker Training for the United Methodist Church, Prison Ministries and other benevolent organizations.

On September 7, 1950, he married Sarah Ann McMurry. They raised four children: Murry William, Laura Nell, Frank Wilson and Samuel Arthur. The family enjoyed traveling, camping and scouting as well as being active in the United Methodist Church.

Thurman remarried after his first wife, Sarah, passed away in November 1999. On September 28,2001, he married Opal Douglas of Athens. They resided in Athens and spent 17 years together until her death in 2018.

Thurman was preceded in death by his parents; his sons, William, Frank and Samuel and his two wives. He is survived by his daughter, Laura Nell Fox; stepdaughter, Kay Douglas Nelms; three grandchildren, Brent Burns, Laura Burns Thiele and Henry Calvin Burns; two great-grandchildren, Isaac Burns and Sam Thiele.

A graveside service will be held at Limestone Memorial Gardens on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 2:00PM with John Woods and Joseph Fox officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Gideons International, Hospice of the Valley and Athens First United Methodist Church.
