ATHENS-A family is hoping you’ll take the time today to learn about the symptoms and vaccines related to meningitis.
That’s because Monday, September 23 should have been a birthday celebration for Jessica Elkins, an Athens High School cheerleader. Instead, her family joined Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks to declare September 23 as Meningitis Awareness Day in Athens.
Jessica died very suddenly from meningitis December 26, 2007, when she was a freshman at Athens High. Her family wants to encourage parents to educate themselves about the disease in hopes another family will not experience the same tragedy.
