James Jacob StraubJames Jacob Straub, 63, of Huntsville, left this world the way he lived it surrounded by family and his faith. Jim, a graduate of The University of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann Medical College, worked as an anesthesiologist at Athens-Limestone Hospital and other regional hospitals. He married Kathy on May 20, 1983 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in a double wedding with Kathy’s sister, Kim (David) Kotheimer in Pittsburgh, PA. They moved to Alabama in 1988 and raised their four children.

Jim was an avid gardener leaving fields of gladiolas in their yard. He brought his professional healing to the greenhouse, reviving even the most forlorn plants. Bridge was another passion and he was on his way to reaching the level of Life Master in the game.

After retirement, he enjoyed his afternoons with his friends at the Huntsville Bridge Center. What he enjoyed most was time spent with his family. He loved Halloween Nights at Universal Studios with his boys, the beach, and Christmas. He only watched the Eagles when they were winning, but he could watch Alabama anytime (his four Alabama grad children insisted). Jim and his sister, Alexzan, were very close and loved trying new restaurants and overloading the fridge with their monumental Costco runs.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Jake and Alex. He survives in the hearts and memories of his wife of 36 years Kathy, his children, Kim, Michael (Lindsey), Jamie, and Patrick, his sister Alexzan and the world’s most precious baby, grand-daughter, Sloane Ocean. He and his family were supported throughout his illness by a community of loving friends and the superb care of Dr.Jeremy Hon.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, September 15, 2019 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 16 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. There will be a private interment.

In lieu of flowers, you may honor Jim with a donation to The Russel Hill Cancer Foundation.
