Katherine Ofenloch passed away September 8th after a battle with cancer. Born in New York City, she moved to Memphis, TN when she was two years old.
Katherine graduated from the University of Memphis with a degree in History, and then went on to earn a Teaching Certificate from the University of California and a Master’s in Education from the University of Alabama. She taught in the Huntsville School System, teaching second and fourth grades, Special Ed, and disciplinary students at various times in her career. She and John were married on July 20, 1963 at Saint Anne’s Catholic Church in Memphis and then lived in California before moving to Huntsville in 1966.
Upon retiring from the school system, Katherine’s occupation was mother, grandmother and community volunteer. She volunteered for many years and held leadership roles in many organizations, including president, vice president, decorations chairman, hospitality chairman, fundraising chairman, and membership chairman. She was involved in the Jaycettes, March of Dimes, DuMidi Club, the Gothic Guild, EarlyWorks Society, Friends of the Huntsville Symphony, First Stop, Manna House, Museum of Art Guild, Holy Spirit Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, and Parent Teacher Association. Katherine taught religious education classes during the school year and assisted with Vacation Bible School in the summer. She was a gracious hostess and enjoyed entertaining friends and family at her home.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Betty and Tom McMahon, and one sister, Anne Marie Falsone Kennedy. She is survived by her husband, John; children, Amy Ofenloch Henrich (Ted) of Huntsville, John Ofenloch Jr. (Melanie) of Dallas, TX, and Katie Ofenloch Sanders (Eric) of Huntsville; and six beloved grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, September 13 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with Father Michael Mac Mahon officiating.
