ATHENS-In September, Dr. Strange appears at Athens City Hall. Batman rides in a parade near Downtown Athens. Elastigirl takes photos with children at Big Spring Memorial Park.

These superheroes make the trek to Athens in September for the children in our community who are battling cancer.

Dr. Strange recently appeared at Athens City Hall to help with a proclamation signing by the family of the late Eli Williams and Mayor Ronnie Marks designating September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Athens.

Dr. Strange will join Batman, Elastigirl and approximately 36 more superheroes in Athens on Sept. 14 for the sixth annual Eli’s Block Party Foundation Superhero Day at Big Spring Memorial Park. The event includes activities for children and is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Parade of Heroes will start at 10:45 a.m. at the west end of the park with heroes exiting their vehicles on the east end. There is no entry fee, but there will be vendors selling food or other items.

Eli’s Block Party Childhood Cancer Foundation is a non-profit organization created in memory of Eli Williams, an Athens child who died from brain cancer. The organization hosts events to give back to the community, to raise money for childhood cancer research, and to pay funeral expenses of children lost to cancer.

Kristie Williams, mother of Eli, provided information for the city proclamation that states childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children, and that one in 285 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed by their 20th birthday.

“Family and friends impacted by childhood cancer have a difficult journey, and I commend Kristie and the family and friends of Eli who are honoring his memory by giving back to our community,” Mayor Marks said. “Superhero Day, the car shows and other events they host help raise awareness, raise funds for research and provide family-friendly activities for our citizens.”

Prior to Superhero Day, citizens can get their capes out and ready to fly by attending a free community concert on Sept. 13 at High Cotton Arts. Athens Arts League is supporting Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by dedicating its last Art After Hours concert event for childhood cancer awareness.

There will be superhero-themed activities for children, such as design your own superhero, and temporary yellow ribbon awareness tattoos. Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite superhero outfit or T-shirt and bring a chair to enjoy the outdoor concert, weather permitting.

Artists will have locally made art for sale, and the Huntsville-based band Seeking Babylon will perform outside, on Washington Street. Sylvia Vaughn’s Little Kitchen Food Truck will have items for sale, and Athens Arts League will provide light refreshments.
