Bentley awards funding to encourage self sufficiency

MONTGOMERY – Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded nearly $3 million to assist low-income individuals and families to achieve self-sufficiency through job training, obtain decent housing and improve their lives through other measures.

Bentley awarded $2.93 million to 20 regional community services agencies that process assistance requests and provide services to residents in all 67 Alabama counties. The award is one of four quarterly allotments issued to the state by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The agencies will use the funding for job training and education opportunities, nutrition assistance, housing, community volunteer programs, income management training and credit counseling.
The amounts received, the recipient agencies and their service regions are:

• $113,039 to Community Action Agency of Northwest Alabama Inc. (Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale counties )
• $217,981 to Community Service Programs of West Alabama Inc. (Bibb, Choctaw, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Sumter and Tuscaloosa counties)
• $116,096 to Elmore-Autauga Community Action Agency (Autauga, Elmore, Dallas and Perry counties)
• $93,204 to Alabama Council on Human Relations Inc. (Lee County)
• $19,850 to Pickens County Community Action Committee (Pickens County )
• $140,072 to Human Resource Development Corp. (Barbour, Coffee, Geneva, Henry and Houston counties)
• $210,058 to Community Action Agency of South Alabama (Baldwin, Escambia, Clarke, Conecuh, Marengo, Monroe and Wilcox counties)
• $131,216 to Community Action Partnership of North Alabama Inc. (Cullman, Lawrence and Morgan counties)
• $371,640 to Jefferson County Committee for Economic Opportunity (Jefferson County)
• $299,999 to Mobile Community Action Agency (Mobile and Washington counties)
• $38,325 to Marion-Winston Counties Community Action Committee Inc. (Marion and Winston counties) • $59,426 to Community Action Committee of Chambers-Tallapoosa-Coosa Inc. (Chambers, Tallapoosa and Coosa counties)
• $80,518 to Eleventh Area of Alabama Opportunity Action Committee Inc. (Chilton and Shelby counties) • $172,658 million to Community Action Agency of Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Calhoun and Cleburne Counties (Talladega, Clay, Randolph, Calhoun and Cleburne counties)
• $64,219 to Community Action of Etowah County Inc. (Etowah County)
• $46,318 to Walker County Community Action Agency Inc. (Walker County)
• $178,587 to Community Action Partnership Huntsville/Madison and Limestone Counties Inc. (Madison and Limestone counties)
• $229,038 to Community Action Agency of Northeast Alabama Inc. (Blount, Cherokee, DeKalb, Jackson, Marshall and St. Clair counties.)
• $136,385 to Organized Community Action Program Inc. (Bullock, Butler, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Lowndes and Pike counties)
• $154,272 to Montgomery Community Action Committee Inc. (Montgomery County)
• $63,454 to Macon-Russell Community Action Agency Inc. (Macon and Russell counties)
Depending upon local needs, agencies will determine the specific services that will be provided with the funding. Services are based on guidelines published by Health and Human Services. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the awards.
