Alton Woodrow Talley passed away peacefully Saturday June 15, 2019, at River City Rehab. Mr. Talley was born July 24, 1922, in Sylacauga, Alabama, and lived most of his life in Birmingham before moving to Decatur to be near his family in February, 2012. He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Force; was a lifetime member of the American Legion and a past commander of the Birmingham Post of the American Legion. He was retired from the Housing Authority of Birmingham as a paint contractor. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Birmingham. Pop was an accomplished woodworker and prided himself in doing an excellent job on each piece. We treasure the things he made for his family.
Mr. Talley was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 73 years, Alta; his parents, Edward and Alma Talley; brothers, Amos and Donald.
Mr. Talley is survived by three sons and their wives, Richard and Anita of Decatur, Robert and Ava of Scarborough, Maine, and Edward and Carolyn of Walland, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Rich Talley and Leah Peete (Preston) of Decatur, Sheryl Flavain (Chris) of Port Charlotte, FL, Shawn Talley (Michelle) of Urbana, MD, Chris Talley (Carrie) of Madison and Jonathan Talley of Gainesville, FL; eleven great-grandchildren, who were so special to him; one brother, Russell Talley of Boaz; one sister, Eleanor Baltzer of Birmingham.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 18, 2019, 6-8 PM at Ridout’s Brown-Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will be Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at 11 AM for his family and friends in Birmingham at the Jefferson Memorial Gardens, Trussville, Alabama with is son, Edward Talley officiating.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Granddaughters and great-granddaughters will be honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beltline Church of Christ Building Fund, 2159 Beltline Road, S.W., Decatur, AL 35601, in his memory.
The family would like to thank Morningside Assisted Living nurses and staff for their amazing loving care of Pop since he moved to Decatur in 2012. He loved each of you dearly, and he loved being a resident of the facility. His family sincerely appreciates your kindness to him.
