Funeral service for Mrs. Angela Laverne McConnell Whitehead, age 81, of Decatur will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, May 17, 2019, at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel in Decatur, AL with Rev. Bobby Ray Halbrooks and Rev. Ted Amey officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until time of service. Interment will be in Burningtree Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Whitehead died peacefully on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family, following a recent diagnosis of brain cancer. She was born April 13, 1938, in the Anderson community of Lauderdale County to Houston Leon McConnell and Tera Espy White McConnell Bates. She was a dedicated Christian, who loved her Lord Jesus deeply and started each day reading her Bible and praying. She was a loving wife of nearly 63 years, devoted mother, grandmother “Mama Angie,” and great-grandmother. She was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and the Church at Stone River (a United Methodist Church Community). She served as church historian and several other positions at St. Luke UMC. She was the co-proprietor of Tommy’s Sur-Sav Convenience Store, serving former Austin High campus students and faculty along with the southwest Decatur community for thirty years. She enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family at Smith Lake, creating numerous beautiful cross stitch pictures for family members, and completing her daily crossword puzzle. She was an excellent cook and if a loved one was feeling under the weather, homemade chicken and dumplings with a warm banana pudding was delivered. This meal warmed hearts and seemed to have superior healing powers to any chicken soup.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include the love of her life, husband Tommy A. Whitehead of Decatur; three children, Tammy Haney (Russell) of Hartselle, Michael Whitehead (Carol) of Decatur, and Pamela Whitehead of Decatur; two granddaughters, Stephanie McGrew (Kevin) of Somerville, and Melanie Thompson (Bob) of Huntsville; three great-grandchildren, J. Robert Thompson, Alexander McGrew, and Madelyn Thompson.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Brazelton, Brian Legg, Joe Lubisco Jr., Joey Lubisco, Phillip McConnell, Tim McConnell, Tim Reeves, and William White. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Alford, Ken Barnes, Bob Cooper, Gary Glass, David Griffin, Rev. Zeke Haselden, and Ted Holland.

The family of Mrs. Whitehead would like to thank the caring staffs of Dr. Kirk Jackson, Dr. Sammy Becdach, and Hospice of the Valley.
