Verla C. Purcell, age 94, of Empire passed away May 14, 2019. She was the matriarch of her family. She lead them with her strong, patient and loving personality. Verla loved hummingbirds, gardening and flowers. She enjoyed cooking for her family. She made the best biscuits and gravy, chicken dressing and strawberry cake. Verla loved her cats and dogs and often spoiled them with leftovers from home cooked meals. She had a gift for quilting and crocheting. Verla was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church. She is predeceased by her husband of 60 years, J.T. Purcell; sons, Rex Purcell, Ray Purcell and Frankie Purcell. Verla is survived by her children, Jerry (Betty) Purcell, Mickey (Carol) Purcell, and Pamela (Jr.) Graham; 23 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren as well as a host of extended family and friends. Funeral Services will be held at New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation from 6:00pm – 8:00 pm Thursday, May 16, 2019. Funeral Service 11:00 am Friday, May 17, 2019 with burial following in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Warrior.
