Walt Crumpton – Obituary

Walt Crumpton passed away on Sunday, May 12, at Willowbrooke Court at Magnolia Trace. He celebrated his 100th birthday on January 14th. He served in the Navy for three years during World War II on the USS Melville. When the war was over, he and his wife Ann went to Auburn University where he graduated in mechanical engineering.

Walt and Ann came to Huntsville in April, 1951, where he went to work with the Army Ballistic Missile Agency at Redstone Arsenal. After NASA was formed in 1958, he worked on the Mercury, Gemini, Jupiter and Apollo rocket programs and the space shuttle program.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Andy and Olivia Crumpton. He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Ann; his children, Lea Crumpton Chaffin (Phil) and Scott Crumpton (Debbie); grandchildren, Allison Chaffin Griffin (Joey), Andy Chaffin (Jessica), and Drew Crumpton (Corinna); and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, May 15, at 2:00 pm. No visitation is planned.
