ATHENS-On Thursday, May 9 the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reports a death of one person in a single-vehicle accident near Athens and another fatal accident involving a pedestrian has been reported by Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson on Thursday, May 9:
“A single-vehicle crash at 6:45 a.m. today, May 9, has claimed the life of an Athens man. Luis Sanchez Cruz, 33, was killed when the 2008 Lexus IS250 he was driving collided with a CSX train at the Laughmiller Road crossing.
Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash occurred two miles south of Athens. Nothing further is available as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.”

“This morning (Thursday, May 9) shortly after 6:30 the police department was notified of an accident on West Elm Street between Springer Blvd and Lucasferry Road.
At this time it appears a vehicle was west bound on Elm Street and a pedestrian was walking east on the side of Elm Street. The vehicle struck Kent Sowell. Sowell passed away on the scene. Sowell was 63 years old.
The investigation into this accident is continuing.”
