Northwest-Shoals students win 16 medals at State SkillsUSA competition

MUSCLE SHOALS – Northwest-Shoals Community College (NW-SCC) recently competed in the SkillsUSA Alabama State Leadership and Skills Conference where 16 students from the Carpentry and Salon and Spa program brought home medals, with 10 winning state competition and qualifying for the national competition in Louisville, Ky.

NW-SCC students Becca Belue, of Rogersville, (Cosmetology); Rainey Johnson, of Moulton, (Esthetics); Julie Stegall, of Florence, (Nail Care); Magan Stewart, of Anderson, (Customer Service); Jordan Appleton, of Hillsboro, (Prepared Speech); Kesha Davis, of Courtland, (Job Skill Demonstration A); Porshe Paris, of Florence, (Job Skill Demonstration Open); Grady LeCroy, of Florence, (Carpentry); Brodey Staggs, of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., (Cabinetmaking); and Nolan Stracener, of Muscle Shoals, (Cabinetmaking, participated in secondary competition as a NW-SCC dual enrolled student at Colbert County High School); won gold at the State Skills USA Competition.

Their first place wins qualify them to represent Alabama at the 55th annual SkillsUSA National Competition June 24-28, 2019. They will compete against more than 6,500 career and technical education students.
In addition to the gold medalists, several NW-SCC students also won silver, bronze, and placed in the top five of the competition. Sydney Hallmark, of Loretto, Tenn., (Esthetics); Kaitlyn Justice, of Tuscumbia, (Customer Service); AJ Webster, of Florence, (Carpentry); Danny Borden, of Russellville, (Cabinetmaking); won silver medal honors. Johni Sutton, of Florence, (Cosmetology) and Spencer Lodgson, of Killen, (Cabinetmaking) won bronze medal honors. Sam Flippo, of Florence, and Anthony Jordan, of Muscle Shoals, placed fourth and fifth respectively in Men’s Hair Design.
