Elsie Mae Cowan Spain, 84, died Thursday, March 21, 2019, at the home of her daughter, BeLinda Lusk (Dwayne) where she was cared for by her three daughters. Elsie was born February 22, 1935 in Decatur, Alabama, to Ossie Mae Lee Corbin and Jimmie Cowan. Elsie grew up in Decatur and attended Decatur High School. She met the only love of her life and was married 53 years to Walter Glenn Spain, who preceded her in death in 2005. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Lee Cowan and William Ray Cowan. Elsie was filled with compassion and a keen sense of empathy and never met a stranger, and she always had time to listen first and then talk about JESUS. Elsie attended Fellowship Baptist in Decatur for over 40 years and was a devoted Sunday School and Discipleship Training Teacher. Her children cannot remember a time period when she didn’t teach Sunday School. Elsie enjoyed studying her next lessons to teach and loved reading God’s word. Elsie’s goal was to work to the age of 75. After attaining that goal she retired from The Decatur Daily and went on to work at the voting polls for several years. Elsie is survived by her three daughters, Darlene Thomas, BeLinda Lusk and Glenda Chaney; six grandchildren, Julian Carter (Ashley), Anthoney Lynn (Jessica),Rodney Rodman, April Blake, Kevin Lusk (Kate) and Chris Lusk (Stephanie); 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; along with special friends, Fannie Mae Self, Mary Morgan, Thom Cook and many others who loved her as a Mother figure, teacher and compassionate friend. Elsie’s life will be celebrated Sunday, March 24, 2019, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Decatur, with visitation from 1:30 pm until 3:00 pm. Service will begin at 3:00 pm with Bro Martin Poe officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Julian Carter, Anthoney Lynn, Rodney Rodman, Tyler Hale, Dwayne Lusk and Thom Cook.
