Jean Paxton.jpg On Friday, March 8, 2019, Jean Nethery Paxton passed away in Florence at the age of 90. She was born January 31, 1929 in Sheffield to Grant and Thelma Lindley Nethery. She attended Sheffield High School and Baptist Memorial School of Nursing (Memphis, TN), and worked in local hospitals and nursing homes as an RN. On June 4, 1952 she married William M. Paxton, Jr. They lived in Florence and raised two children, Lindley and William; they were lifelong members of the First Presbyterian Church.

Jean loved people and animals–first and foremost her family and pets. But she was also active in her community and state: as a member of the area Junior League, local pet rescues, and Red Cross, and as state board member and volunteer for the American Cancer Society and HSUS.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by children, Lindley and William; grandchildren, Will (Ann Marie), Andrew and Justin; great-grandchild, Emma Jane; sister, Florence, and many nieces and nephews. She also had two special cats, that miss her already.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Florence with Reverend Brandon E. Miles and Dr. James K. Thompson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society.
