Harriet Kathrine “Katie” McDonald – Obituary

Harriet Kathrine “Katie” McDonald was born in Russellville, Alabama on May 4, 1930 and passed away on February 28, 2019. Katie, loving daughter of Helen M. and James H. McIntosh, Sr. (both deceased), had three siblings to include James “Jim” H. McIntosh, Jr. (deceased), Jean M. McIntosh (deceased) and John W. McIntosh (Atlanta, GA). In addition to her parents, her brother Jim and sister Jean, she was also predeceased by her son John McDonald, III (Florence, AL) and a niece, Melanie McIntosh (Florence, AL).

Katie is survived by her children to include Andrew McDonald, Sr. (wife Brenner and son Bailey Van Meter) of Nashville, TN and his children Alice and Andrew, Jr., David McDonald (Marietta, GA), Paul McDonald (Lancaster, PA) and Joseph McDonald (Florence, AL); her brother Jim and Cornelia McIntosh’s children to include Ladd McIntosh (wife Lynne) of Roswell, GA and their children Meredith, Matthew (wife Sara) and Mark McIntosh; Douglas McIntosh (wife Lori) of Lakeland, FL and Alan McIntosh (Florence, AL); and her brother John’s children Ingrid McIntosh (daughter Brynn), Matthew McIntosh (wife Paula deceased) and their child Brenek, and Golson McIntosh (wife Jo) and their children Serenity, Gavin and Mason.

Katie graduated from Stuart Hall School (Staunton, VA) and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1952 where she was a charter member of the Beta chapter of Pi Beta Phi sorority and began her professional teaching career in Sylacauga, AL. She relocated to Florence, AL, married John Edward McDonald, Jr. in 1957. In addition to raising 5 boys, she was a classically-trained pianist and shared her talents by teaching music to many and playing for her church. Ironically, she died at the age of 88 which is the same number of keys on a piano. Katie will be remembered for her unique style, her faith and her love of the mountains and the beach.

The family acknowledges her many friends and their contributions to her life. The family also wishes to thank her final caregivers in Marietta, GA to include the staff and associated physicians at Autumn Breeze Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility, WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center and Tranquility Hospice at Cobb Hospital.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 3:30 p.m. in Greenview Memorial Park. For those who wish, the family will receive friends from 3:00-3:30 p.m.at the graveside.

A In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the University of Alabama School of Music (Harriet Kathrine McDonald fund).
