FLORENCE– The Florence Tree Commission and Mayor Steve Holt are honored to announce that the City of Florence has been named the 2019 Alabama Urban Forestry Community by the Alabama Urban Forestry Association.

You are invited to join in the celebration on February 21, 2019 at 10:30 am at the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library.  The Arbor Day Celebration Program can be found on florenceal.org. In celebration of Arbor Day, the Florence Tree Commission will give away 100 white dogwood trees to the first hundred residents.

Along with being named Alabama’s Urban Forestry Community, we have retained our status as a “Tree City USA” for the 32nd consecutive year by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Earning these distinctions has required the efforts of the Florence Street, Electricity, and Parks and Recreation Departments, the Florence Housing Authority, the Mayor and City Council, and the Florence Tree Commission and Urban Forestry Team.

A White Dogwood Tree will be planted at 401 North Walnut Street to commemorate the lives of Danny Henson, John Johnson, Mary Charlene Lee, and Earline Wiginton.  This memorial tree planting by the Florence Tree Commission was made possible from donations given to the Memorial Tree Fund.

As another part of the city’s celebration of Arbor Day, this year the city held an Arbor Day poster contest. Of thirty entrants from Hibbett School, the Tree Committee has selected the top three student poster entries. These students will be named and will be given cash awards at Hibbett School.
