Billy Joe Flannagin, 85, of Florence, passed away February 13, 2019, at his home.  He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 16, 2019, from 12-3 p.m. at Greenview Funeral Home. The funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. in Greenview Memorial Chapel with Rev. Kevin Flannagin and Rev. Mike Crews officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenview Memorial Park.

Billy Joe was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Opal, for 64 years.  He was a quiet, caring man who had a genuine love for his family and friends. He was a man of great integrity who loved the Lord and shared that love with others. Throughout his life, he graciously gave to those in need of help.  Joe had an incredible work ethic. Beginning as a young boy doing farm work and continuing on, many years of hard work led to his retirement in 1995 after 29 years at Reynolds. During those years, he started Flannagin Roofing Company where he taught his sons and others the trade. They roofed homes along with working their regular jobs. Because of all those years of hard work, even at 85, he was well-known for his firm, strong handshake. He usually had a project going around the house or was repairing something. It seemed that he could always find a way to make things work just a little bit better than before.  Joe was also a skilled gardener. Year after year, he and his wife grew a beautiful garden where he especially loved growing tomatoes and watermelons. He’ll be deeply missed as we were all blessed to have had him in our lives, whether you knew him as Joe, Billy Joe, Mr. Flannagin, dad, daddy, or Papaw.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Gertrude Flannagin; wife, Opal Oliver Flannagin; son, Roger Flannagin; granddaughter, Kristi Flannagin; brothers, Hershel, Nolan, and Earl Clayton Flannagin; and sisters, Elsie Posey, Bessie Howard and Selma Terry.

He is survived by his sons, Phillip Flannagin (Carla) and Kevin Flannagin (Pam); daughter, Sandra Flannagin Morgan (Allen); grandchildren, Jennifer McCurry (Wes), Caroline McCoy (Loren), Kelli Templeton (Matt), Ben Morgan (Melinda), Kati Hammons (Michael), Kelsi Crane (Daniel), and Kasi Flannagin; great-grandchildren, Lilly and Cole Collins, Olivia, Lucy, and Wesley McCurry, Gray and Will McCoy, Ella, Selah, Elise, and Liam Templeton, Addy, Ben, and Abe Hammons, Emma and Charlie Ann Crane, and Nora Morgan.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gideons International at P.O. Box 336, Florence, Alabama 35631.
