James Melvin Nicholas – Obituary

F.2.14.19 James Nicholas.jpgJames Melvin Nicholas, 69, of Killen passed away Monday, February 11, 2019 at North Alabama Medical Center.

Melvin was a graduate of Coffee High School and Athens State University. He served in the United States Navy, was retired from TVA/Browns Ferry as a computer engineer and after retirement, he worked at Sam’s Club as a greeter welcoming the public with a smile. He was a member of Helton Drive Church of Christ and a proud member of the Star Hunting Club, where he spent his free time. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed word find puzzles, watching sports and outdoor shows. He took pride in teaching his grandchildren to love the outdoors and to hunt. He most of all loved spending time with his family and friends.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 16th from noon to 2 p.m. at Rogersville Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow in the chapel with Ed Brand and Brad Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Civitan Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be Allen Huggins, Brad Holmes, David Ezell, Daniel Ezell, Tim Holt, Dexter Austin, David Charles and Ricky Cagle; honorary, Jeff Huggins and Keith Garrett.

Mr. Nicholas was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert and Vergie Nicholas; nephew, Nicholas Butler and mother-in-law, Catherine Cagle McCartney. He is survived by his wife of nearly 46 years, Catherine Jo Ann McCartney Nicholas; daughters, Jody (Jeff) Huggins and Sara (Brad) Holmes; grandchildren, Allen and Katie Huggins and Parker and Paxton Holmes; sisters, Paula (Jim) Butler and Judy Goin; father-in-law, Junior McCartney; sister-in-law, Janice (David) Ezell; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to be made to Forever Wild Land Trust, 64 N. Union Street, Suite 464, Montgomery, AL 36130.

The family would like to express special thanks to the caring staff of Northwest Alabama Cancer Center, Florence.
