Judith Carol Shotts Stewart – Obituary

On Tuesday, February 5th, 2019, in Battle Creek, Michigan, Judith Carol Shotts Stewart left her earthly home, bound for her heavenly one. There she was greeted by her mother, her brother, her son and many others gone on before her.  Judy was born September 26, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan to Robert Paul and Lula Floy Thorn Shotts who were respectively from Marion and Franklin Counties in Alabama.   Paul and Floy moved from Alabama to Michigan to find work around 1936.

Judy grew up in Detroit and finished high school, graduating with honors.  During her teen years, she studied piano and became an accomplished pianist.   Following high school, she went to work for General Motors Corporation in Detroit, from which she retired after a 30-year career as an executive secretary. She attended Bethel Baptist Church in Battle Creek, MI.

She was married to William L. Stewart of Tacoma, Washington. They had one son, Gordon Michael Stewart, who predeceased both of them in September, 2002 in Tacoma, Washington. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her only sibling, an older brother, Robert Lee Shotts and his wife, Dorothy.

She is survived by one grandson – Brandon Stewart; nieces – Judith Allen, Greenville, SC, Robin Bishop and  Misty Harley, both of Columbia, SC, Juanita Shotts and Lili Cheney, both of Battle Creek, MI and Faith Shotts-Flikkema, Grand Rapids, MI; a nephew – Jonathan Shotts, Battle Creek, MI and an aunt – Gertrude Edman, Hamilton, AL.

Graveside services will be Saturday, February 9, 3 p.m. at Shottsville Cemetery, Vina, AL with Jonathan Shotts officiating. Burial will be in Shottsville Cemetery in the Shottsville Community, State Road 56, Vina, AL. Deaton Funeral Home, Red Bay, AL will be in charge of arrangements.
