D.2.3.19 Bertha Swan.jpgA Celebration of Life for Mrs. Bertha M. Swan, 90, of Somerville, Alabama will be noon Tuesday at St. John M.B. Church in Somerville and inhumation in Somerville Cemetery. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to service. Public viewing will be Monday from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and the family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. at Reynolds Funeral Home.

Mother Bertha Burton Swan was born on December 27, 1927 to the late Sam and Cora McDaniel Gaines in the Talucah Community of Morgan County, Alabama. She departed this life at her home in Somerville, Alabama on January 30, 2019.

Mrs. Swan accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. John M.B. Church. She served as president of the Mother’s Board, Financial Clerk and served faithfully on many other auxiliaries and capacities in the church. She remained faithful until her health failed.

She attended Priceville High School and was employed at a mental health facility in Akron, Ohio for many years.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Waddell Swan; one son, Henry Shelvy Burton; siblings, Thelma Burton, Maggie Townsend, Sam Gaines, Lester Binford, Pat Gaines, Mary Anderson, and Henry Clay Burton; in-laws, Lisa Burton and Moses Mason.

She leaves to remember and honor her legacy: six sons, Curtis James (Rose) Burton, Amos Hayes Burton, both of Somerville, Donald Alfred (Glenda) Burton, of Hartselle, Alfonzo “Roachie” Burton, of Somerville, Russell Swan, Merrell Swan, both of Akron, Ohio; two daughters, Maggie Faye Mason, of Pulaski, Tennessee, Myra Swan, of Akron, Ohio; 26 loving grandchildren; and a plethora of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Vergie Bell Aldridge, of Decatur; one close special friend, Geneva Randell, of Decatur, and a host of other relatives and friends
