ATHENS-Artists in Athens are offering hearts that never melt and flowers that never fade during this weekend’s Sweet’art Saturday event.

The event is Saturday, Feb. 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at High Cotton Arts in Downtown Athens. Artists have created stained glass hearts, romantic paintings and even a mixed media rose piece to help shoppers treat their Valentines.

“What can be more romantic than receiving a rose from your loved one on Valentine’s Day?” asked Athens Arts League Board member and artist Karen Middleton, who created the mixed media rose piece. “This beaded rose won’t wilt, and the corner is detailed with cameos, a breast cancer awareness ribbon and beadwork that tell the story of the most important elements in a woman’s life.”

For Sweet’art Saturday shoppers, Athens Arts League is providing live music with Station Street featuring Misty Francis of Sharpshooter from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Shoals-based group will perform country, rock and blues.

In addition, Athens Arts League will register shoppers for a drawing for a $25 gift card to High Cotton Arts and a High Cotton Arts T-shirt. The artists will have chocolates and sweet deals at their studios.

Since Sweet’art Saturday is also part of Athens Main Street’s Chocolate Walk, Athens Arts League will provide a popcorn bar with sweet toppings. Chocolate Walk features various participating downtown merchants, and while tickets for that event are sold out, High Cotton Arts welcomes anyone to stop by to shop, register for giveaways, enjoy music and snack on popcorn.

“While this event focuses on Valentine’s Day, shoppers

will also find unique gifts for Mardi Gras, birthdays, special occasions and home décor,” said Athens Arts League Board member Holly Hollman. “Sometimes it is nice to splurge on yourself, too, and our artists have a variety of gift ideas to purchase for yourself or others.”

High Cotton Arts is located at 103 W. Washington Street in the green building. It features studio and exhibit artists, a Student Studio and a place for art classes. To stay updated on events follow High Cotton Arts and Athens Arts League on Facebook.
