Ernie B KotaraErnie Benedict Kotara, age 86, of Owens Cross Roads, AL, former resident of Lake Charles, LA passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on Friday, January 18, 2019. Ernie was born in Falls City, TX on September 9, 1932 to Julian and Lottie Skloss Kotara. He graduated from Falls City High School in 1951. Ernie was married to Debbie Maples Kotara on July 1, 2005; they were married 13 years.
He worked in the oilfield for Schlumberger and later worked in insurance for Metlife and then as an insurance broker. Ernie was a professional bowler, a member of the Hall of Fame. He had 17 perfect games. Also he was an avid golfer, hitting golf balls daily and loved the sport. Ernie loved to laugh, talk and debate about politics and enjoyed Cajun music and dancing. Ernie was a member of New Salem Baptist Church.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 14 years Debbie Maples Kotara; his 3 sons Ben Kotara (Lorna) of Covington, LA, Randy Kotara (Bonnie) of Lacassine, LA and Kenn Kotara of Ashville, NC; his daughter Brandyce Kotara Sable (Mike) of Jacksonville, FL; 3 step-sons Dr. Allan Maples (Sara Beth) of Owens Cross Roads, AL, Keith Maples (Debbie) of Hattiesburg, MS and Stace Maples (Stephanie) of Palo Alto, CA; a step-daughter Andrea Williams (Danny) of Baton Rouge, LA; grandchildren Renier Rodriguez, Alexandria “Alex” Rodriguez and Jacqueline “Jackie” Rodriguez all of Jacksonville, FL, Julian Kotara of Asheville, NC, Paden Kotara, Seth Kotara and Mary Kate Kotara of Lacassine, LA, Madison Kotara of Baton Rouge, LA, Mary Collier Maples, Tanya Maples , Bodgan Maples and Sergey Maples of Owens Cross Roads, AL, Tyler Maples of Hattiesburg, MS, Ian Maples, Judah Maples, Zeke Maples and Caleb Maples of Palo Alto, CA and great-grandsons Jo Jo, Noah, Eli and Tripp.
Ernie was preceded in death by his parents Julian Kotara and Lottie Skloss Kotara; brother Fabien Julian Kotara and his sister Doris O’Bryant

A visitation for Ernie will be held on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Hampton Cove Funeral Home from 1 to 3 pm. His funeral service will follow at 3 pm with Rev. Mike Shaneyfelt officiating.
Ernie will be taken to Sulphur, LA for additional services and burial to be handled by Johnson Robinson Funeral Home in Sulphur, LA. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 from 3 to 8 pm at Johnson Robinson Funeral Home in Sulphur, LA with a Rosary at 6pm. Ernie’s service will be Thursday, January 24, 2019 at 10 am at Johnson Robinson Funeral Home.
Ernie will be buried in Big Woods Cemetery in Eldergy, LA

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Ernie’s memory to the Alzheimers Association or to New Salem Baptist Church in Owens Cross Roads.
