MUSCLE SHOALS – Alabama Career Center staff will join the Alabama Department of Commerce’s Rapid Response Unit to meet with laid-off employees of Freight Car America. More than 140 employees were laid off on January 14, 2019.
FreightCar America announced Monday, January 14 the layoff of 145 workers at its plant in the Barton Riverfront Industrial Park.
According to officials at FrieghtCar America they plan to rehire those positions within the next six months. They would like to recall those affected by the layoff as production demands increase.
These meetings will explain benefits afforded to them as dislocated workers through State and Federal resources, including:
- how to apply for unemployment benefits,
- information on training scholarships up to $19,000,
- reimbursement of relocation expenses up to $3,500,
- information regarding On-the-Job training (the state can reimburse a company up to half of dislocated workers’ salaries for up to six months),
- mortgage payment assistance up to $30,000,
- affordable health insurance options for adults and children,
- 401k and retirement assistance,
- information regarding food, clothing, and other social service programs available.
The meeting will last no longer than one hour and multiple meeting times are scheduled.
