The theme for this year’s competition is “Mission to Mars,” with the event being sponsored by the UNA STEAM Outreach Initiative.

Through an initiative in the Office of Academic Affairs and Provost, the UNA STEAM Outreach collaborative aims to better prepare students with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful innovators in a global economy. Through engaging students around the subjects of science, technology, engineering, arts and math, the initiative aims to spark an interest and lifelong love of the arts and sciences, among all children.

The collaborative brings together local stakeholders across education, civic organizations, local government and business sectors to promote the Shoals, and Northwest Alabama, as a STEAM-rich region by fostering science and math learning opportunities, supporting partnerships, and aligning resources.

Organizers say they already have 85 teams, with 400 K-12 students from 35 area schools currently registered for the event. Students will collaborate in teams to showcase their research and engineering design ideas.

The competition will be followed by an awards ceremony.
