Mary Elizabeth Quillen Smallwood – Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Quillen Smallwood, of Tuscumbia, passed away on Monday, January 7, 2019 at the age of 96. Her visitation will be Thursday, January 10, 2019 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel at 1:30 p.m. with George Lee and JB Burns officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Tuscumbia.

Mary was born and raised in the west end of Colbert County, in the Maud community. She attended Allsboro School and graduated from Cherokee High School in 1940. She moved to Tuscumbia and went to work at Robbins Tire and Rubber Company where she met her future husband. She loved being a homemaker, housewife and mother. Later in life, when her children were grown, she went to work at Davis Dry Goods Company in Tuscumbia where she worked for 19 years. She was a charter member of Park Terrace Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Sheffield.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ralph Smallwood; parents, Forest and Maude Burns Quillen; sisters, Nedra Walker and Inez McNutt; and nephew, Benny Walker.

Mary is survived by her sons, Bennie Smallwood of Pelham and Forest Smallwood of Tuscumbia; sister, Algie Harris of Cherokee; stepmother, Betty Quillen of Iuka; nephews, James Floyd Walker (Jackie) and Earl Walker (Becky); nieces, Carolyn Christopher (Charles), Ellen Millsaps (Doug), Myra Molgaard (Tim), Patricia Wilson (Tony), Carolyn Upton (John), Donna Dodd (Bryan) and Gina Harris; close family friend, Brian Beck (Margie); and special neighbors, Charles and Dianne Wallace, Frank and Norma Manush and Jim Pitts.

Pallbearers will be her nephews and friends. The Eunice Gaines Sunday school class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
