Irmgard Stuhlinger – Obituary

Feature ImageIrmgard Stuhlinger, 93, of Huntsville passed away Tuesday, December 11. She was born near Stuttgart, Germany in 1925. Her father was a school principal. She studied botany and geology at the university in Tuebingen, where she rented a room from the parents of her future husband Ernst. Irmgard and Ernst met in July 1950 and quickly married in early August because Ernst had to return to the rocket team in Huntsville. Irmgard moved to Huntsville in the fall of 1950. She lived in the same Monte Sano house overlooking the city for 65 years. Irmgard and Ernst were married for more than 57 years until his death in 2008.

Irmgard Stuhlinger loved fine music and the arts, and she had a passion for tending her garden, especially her many roses. She was a Master Gardener and a Monte Sano Garden Club member. She volunteered at Burritt Museum for many years, up until mid-November 2018. Irmgard traveled extensively to visit her family and relatives in Germany, and to many destinations in the United States and other countries.

Irmgard was a loving and devoted wife and mother and served as a guiding light for her three children to follow. She had a rich and full life, and will be remembered for her compassion, generosity, and kindness towards others. She will be dearly missed by her family, relatives, and friends.

Survivors include her daughter, Susanne Schmidt and husband Siegfried Schmidt of Heidenheim, Germany; sons, Tilman W. Stuhlinger of Tucson, Arizona and H. Christoph Stuhlinger of Huntsville; grandsons, Andreas W. Schmidt (wife Anke) of Mettmann, Germany and Alexander E. Wenzel (wife Kathryn) of Hannover, Germany; great-granddaughter, Leana Schmidt; numerous nieces and nephews, and many friends. Her parents, husband, and one brother, Werner Lotze of Stuttgart, Germany, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18 at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at the church with Pastor Gary Soop officiating. Burial will be private.
