ATHENS-On Friday, December 7, the Alabama Department of Transportation provided the City of Athens with an update on the traffic improvement project for U.S. 31 around the new Athens High School.

ALDOT will put the signal for the new Athens High School and Athens Bible School back in flash operation on Friday, Dec. 14.  The signal will remain on flash operation over that weekend, and ALDOT will place it in full operational mode on Monday, Dec. 17, after the morning rush traffic.

ALDOT reported that all roadwork at the new intersection should be completed by Dec. 14.

There are roadwork improvements remaining on U.S. 31 surrounding the intersection.  Those improvements are:

  • An additional left turn lane will be installed at U.S. 31 and Alabama 99.
  • Pedestrian signals added at U.S. 31 and Alabama 251.

That work will not be completed until early 2019.
