ATHENS-The Alabama Department of Transportation notified the City of Athens the new signal on U.S. 31 at the new Athens High School and Athens Bible School will be turned on Monday, Nov. 12.

The signal will operate in flash mode until Nov. 21 (tentatively). ALDOT plans to meet Nov. 12 to decide when the signal will change to full operational mode.

The improvements are related to traffic flow for the new Athens High School and Athens Bible School. The schools are under construction and are located across from each other on U.S. 31. The highway improvements are a joint project with ALDOT providing $950,000 of the $2,114,000 million project.

In addition to the signal, the improvements include:

  • Making crossover improvements on U.S. 31 (southbound right-turn lane and northbound left-turn lane at the new Athens High driveway).
  • Intersection improvements on U.S. 31 at Elm Street.
  • Improving Pryor Street at Golden Eagle Drive, and U.S. 31 at Alabama 251.

Currently, crews continue work in the median in front of the new Athens High School. They have the inside northbound lane shut down. The inside southbound lane is shut down as needed. When not working in the median, crews work on the new southbound right turn lane to the new high school.

Motorists should use caution in the area and expect lane closures.
