John H. McCoy Jr. – Obituary

John H. McCoy Jr. from Portsmouth, VA passed peacefully on Oct 29th, 2018 at Willowbrook skilled care Facility at the age of 92. Son of John McCoy Sr and Hazel McCoy. Preceded in death by his wife Norma McCoy and his brothers Bill and David McCoy. He was survived by his wife Jency Eldridge McCoy.

John enlisted in the Merchant Marines at the age of 17. His Military career continued in the U.S. Army as A Master Sergeant.  During this time he served in WWll and the Korean War. Moving to Huntsville Alabama in the 50’s he became a civil service employee overseeing areas in the Hawk missile systems command at Redstone Arsenal. He retired in the late 80’s. He spent his time raising his Children, honing his skills as a Master woodworker and creating beautiful works of stained glass art.

In 2008 John married Jency Eldridge. Together they enjoyed an active life, traveling, hiking on beautiful Monte Sano Mountain and their daily lunch outings. Their lunch “dates” were something he “looked forward to every day!” John and Jency also enjoyed playing Bridge together with various friends on Monte Sano Mountain. Celebrating almost 20 years together they shared a special bond and supported each other in all endeavors.

His children felt especially blessed as he spent his time and energy ensuring their health and happiness.

Surviving children Ricky McCoy and wife Susan, Bruce McCoy, Holly Toney, Julia Clem and husband Charlie, Jim Eldridge and wife Patti, Bill Eldridge and wife Elina.

Surviving grandchildren Amie McCoy, Tonya Wise, Robby Cheatham, Seth Cheatham, Will Clem, Stephen Clem, Bruce McCoy Jr, Casey McCoy, John McCoy, Michael McCoy, Teresa Simonsen, David McCoy, James McCoy, Rachel Toney, Robby Toney, Steven Toney, Zuleika Eldridge and Erzsika Eldridge and numerous great grandchildren.

A special thanks to Bryleigh, Arianna and Ayden McCoy for all the beautiful artwork they created to brighten his days!  Your artwork helped him smile when he wasn’t feeling his best.

A graveside service will be held at 11am Saturday Nov 10th at Memory Gardens 6801 University Dr. Huntsville, AL. Officiating the service will be Pastor John Mullaney and Pastor Melvin Allen. A visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 at Monte Sano United Methodist Church located at 601 Monte Sano Blvd.
