FLORENCE – Mayor Steve Holt said, “Look around Florence and you are sure to
see a lot of one thing…Churches. In terms of our community, we are a reverent people
and faith and religion have been a leading role in our heritage. With this in mind,
November’s Bicentennial Celebration focuses on Faith. In honor of the Faith theme,
many local churches have prepared tours of their archives.”
Bicentennial Chair Pat Burney says, “The month starts with First Fridays, November 2.
Along with the church events, there will be a WWI display at Pope’s Tavern November
8-10, and then the Veterans Days Ceremony will be at 11:00 a.m., on Monday,
November 12, at the Veterans Memorial in Veterans Park.
To add to the theme and the season, there will be a Community Thanksgiving Service
at the Shoals Theater, at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, November 18, featuring the Shoals Chamber
Singers and a variety of church representatives presenting a historical report on the
different faiths that settled here.
The month will culminate with the annual Christmas Parade. This year, Downtown
Florence Alliance (formerly Downtown Florence Unlimited and Florence Main Street) is
hosting the 2018 Christmas Bicentennial Parade, which will take place at 7:00 p.m., on
Friday, November 30, in downtown Florence.”
