Sheffield Hosts World War 1 Memorial Tribute for Great Flu Epidemic Victims

SHEFFIELD-A memorial tribute honoring the 101 who died from the Great Flu Epidemic of 1918 with most serving as civil defense Nitrate Plant workers will be held at Sheffield Oakwood Cemetery (near Hatch Blvd) on Monday, 12 November at 3 p.m.

The memorial stone honoring the victims of the Great Flu Epidemic was selected by the United States World War I Commission as one of the 100 outstanding monuments across the USA.

The 101 being honored represented some 2,000 Shoals area peopled who died of the epidemic with some answering the civil defense call from all over the USA and included 15 countries. They were all part of an estimated 80,000 work force that participated in Nitrate Plant construction during 1917 and 1918.

Remarks will be presented by Ninon Parker and a wreath will be placed at the memorial site. The American Legion Post 31 Color Guard will present the Colors, provide a rifle volley and play Taps.
