Charles Randall Smith, Jr., passed away peacefully on October 12, 2018 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease.  Charles was born on February 16, 1940 in Decatur, Alabama to Charles R. and Leona Butler Smith. Charles was raised in Huntsville, Alabama. As a young man, he was an active member of the Boy Scouts in which he rose to the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Huntsville High School and then attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1963. He then attended Cumberland School of Law of Sanford University in Birmingham, Alabama where he earned his Juris Doctorate in 1967 and New York University’s School of Law in New York, New York where he earned his Master of Laws in Taxation in 1968. Charles practiced Taxation Law, Corporate Law and Commercial Real Estate Law for a distinguished 40 years where he handled the first large annexation of property into the city of Huntsville and later spearheaded the legal aspect of the annexation of Hampton Cove. Charles was a member of the Alabama State Bar Association, Madison County Bar Association and the Church of Nativity.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Betty Smith Morton; and his first wife, Joyce G. Smith.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 24 years, Linda Hunt Smith; his children, Caroline Smith, Christine Lewter, Reid Fudge, John Fudge and Lucia Hazen; his seven precious grandchildren; one great-grandson; his sister, Mary Jane Caylor; and his extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17th, at the Church of the Nativity with The Rev. Dr. Virginia Monroe officiating.
