Funeral services for Billy Joe Montgomery, age 80 of Tallassee, will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville with Bro. David Floyd officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Garden Hills Cemetery in Opelika.
Mr. Montgomery passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Community Hospital in Tallassee. A Randolph County native, he had lived in Clay, Tallapoosa and Lee counties as well as in Florida but had been a resident of Tallassee for the past 20 years. Mr. Montgomery worked as a truck mechanic for all of his adult life. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and enjoyed watching westerns, collecting guns and going to turkey shoots.
Mr. Montgomery is survived by three daughters: Connie Futral (Steve) of Alexander City, Tammy Thornell of Prattville and Keisha Montgomery-Phillips (Bruce) of Lakeland, FL; one son, Ricky Joe Montgomery of Prattville; two brothers: Willie Noel Montgomery (Sandra) and Barry Lynn Montgomery (Drenda), both of Opelika; many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren, a host of extended family members and his companion of 25 years, Peggy Taylor.
He was preceded in death by his parents: John Price Montgomery and Maudine Latham Montgomery Henley and two sisters: Ruth Atchley and Mary Maude Montgomery.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Tielking, Adam Montgomery, Ted Montgomery, Bruce Phillips, Josh Tielking, Barry Montgomery and Jonathan Tielking.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 12, 2018 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Benefield Funeral Home in Lineville. The family requests no flowers; however, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Hospice Care, 1526 Tallassee, AL 36078.
